The new social distancing measures keeping passengers safe on the Shields Ferry
Nexus, the public body which operates the cross-Tyne service, has carried out detailed work to meet the standards introduced by the Government as lockdown restrictions are eased.
Covid-secure measures to ensure social distancing by passengers and crew on the ferry include new signage, floor markings and customer information throughout the two vessels – Pride of the Tyne and Spirit of the Tyne.

Boarding ramps have new markings for social distancing and the crew will control access and boarding.
A Perspex screen has also been erected where passengers pay to get on board.
People are still advised to only travel on the Ferry where a journey is essential - such as for work if you cannot do so from home and where you can’t walk, cycle or use a car.

Shields Ferry Manager, Carol Timlin, said: “We have completed a huge amount of work to ensure that our ferries meet the Covid-Secure standard.
“A range of measures are now in place to ensure that we can maintain social distancing on our services, this includes new signage and layouts.
“Passengers should only travel on the ferry if the journey is essential such as for work if you cannot do so from home, and where you can’t walk, cycle or use a car.

“We are making sure the Shields Ferry is cleaned to the highest standard, and that there is clear information on how to distance as you travel.”
The ferry is running a regular timetable and from Monday, May 18 is operating from 6.45am-7.30pm, Monday to Saturday, with a 30-minute frequency in place.
