Arbeia on Ocean Road, owned by Little Mix Star Jade Thirlwall, confirmed the closure in a statement on its Facebook page, after ‘tough times’ meant it was no longer possible to stay open.

A statement, posted on Wednesday, October 14, said: “It is with a heavy heart that today we announce Arbeia will be closing until further notice.

"We have tried our best to get through these tough times but unfortunately it is no longer possible for us to keep our doors open.

“This isn’t goodbye forever, we will be back (with a bang) the way we do best, but at the moment we are unable to confirm when this will be.

“We want to take this opportunity to thank all of our customers, staff, people who share, like and comment on our posts - your support has been incredible.

“We will see you soon, until then stay safe and support local.”

The news of the closure comes after Arbeia unveiled a new outdoor seating area over the summer.

An expansion plan was also launched with a new nightclub next door earlier this year.

The bar, originally named Red Door, changed its name to Arbeia – the Roman name for South Shields – in February and was set for the expansion in March, before lockdown was announced.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson revealed a new three-tier system of coronavirus restrictions this week, placing the North East into Tier 2 (High) – or Covid alert level two.

The region was previously subject to tougher local restrictions – rolled out at the end of September – prior to the Government’s new system.

Tier 2 restrictions state that people must not meet socially with friends and family in any indoor setting unless they live with them or have formed a support bubble with them.

This includes in private homes and at any other indoor venues such as bars and restaurants.

The rule of six applies when meeting those you do not live with outside.

A nationwide curfew was also announced by the Government last month, meaning that certain businesses selling food or drink on their premises are required to close between 10pm and 5am.
