These areas in South Tyneside with the highest and lowest numbers of coronavirus deaths

Updated official figures have revealed which areas of South Tyneside have seen the highest number of deaths related to coronavirus.

Data released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) on Friday, July 24, lists the total number of deaths per area for the South Tyneside local authority, and shows which percentage of these are related to coronavirus.

According to the figures, there have been 702 deaths recorded in the borough between March 1, and June 30, this year.

Of these, 162 were related to coronavirus.

This means that 23.07% of deaths across South Tyneside between those dates were related to Covid-19.

According to NHS England, a total of 325 people have died while being cared for by South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust and after contracting the virus.

The ONS figures show Harton East continues to have the highest level of deaths linked to the illness, with 23 deaths recorded, one more than when the figures were released on June 12.

A total of 45 deaths were recorded in that area during that time, with 51.1% of deaths related to coronavirus.

Harton East is followed by Hebburn West with 22 and Hebburn North with 21.

No deaths relating to the virus have been recorded in Brockley Whins or Cleadon and East Boldon.
