The Swace is the second model to come from Suzuki’s collaboration with Toyota and is based on the latest Toyota Corolla Touring Sports. It follows the Rav4-based Across SUV, which was revealed earlier this year and goes on sale this month.

At launch, the Swace will be available in two trim levels - SZ-T and SZ-5 - priced at £27,499 for SZ-T and £29,299. Standard equipment across both models includes dual-zone automatic air conditioning, eight-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, heated front seats, heated steering wheel, seven-inch LCD instrument display and adaptive cruise control. SZ5 adds “smart door locking”, front and rear parking sensors, parking assist, blind spot monitor, rear cross traffic alert and wireless phone charger.

The Swace will be offered with just one engine - a 1.8-litre petrol-electric hybrid. Using a 97bhp petrol engine and 53kW electric motor, it offers a combined 120bhp and up to 64.2mpg. CO2 emissions are 99g/km. There is no indication that the Swace will get the Corolla’s more powerful 2.0-litre hybrid drivetrain.

Like the Corolla, the Swace features four drive modes. Normal, Eco and Sport balance the hybrid system's performance to offer better response or improved frugality, while an EV setting allows the driver to use only electric power for short distances.

The Swace will be built alongside the Corolla at Toyota’s Burnaston plant in Derbyshire and as with the Across, Suzuki hasn’t tried to disguise which car it is based on. The only major difference between it and the Corolla is a restyled front end with the Suzuki branding and new grille/fog light surrounds.

Inside, the five-seat Swace is largely the same as the Corolla apart from a new steering wheel. The estate boot offers an identical 596-litre boot with multi-level flooring, expanding to 1,600 litres with the rear seats folded.

Suzuki is still to confirm the Swace’s exact on-sale date but has said it will arrive “imminently”. It expects to sell around 2,000 examples a year.
