Here’s some of the best light trails, as well as other magical Christmas events, in the region which are set to get you in the festive spirit.
5. Sunderland Christmas lights
Sunderland AFC legend Kevin Phillips will kick off Sunderland’s festive celebrations when he turns on the city’s Christmas lights.
Superkev will take centre stage, flicking the switch to officially start the Christmas count-down at the annual Light Switch On which will take place on Thursday, November 17.
The England striker – now manager at South Shields FC – will join the Mayor of Sunderland Coun Alison Smith and the cast of the Empire Theatre’s panto, Aladdin, for the big event.
And there will be plenty more for the crowds to enjoy, with stunning displays of light artistry from Ministry of Experience. which will see imagery painted mid-air using a variety of light emitting elements. Photo: national world
6. South Tyneside Christmas lights switch on and parade
South Tyneside is set to sparkle as popular events return to mark the coming of the festive season.
The dazzling Christmas Parade, lights switch-on events, carol concert and Santa visits will all return for 2022 as the borough prepares for what will be the most ‘normal’ festive season in three years.
The official countdown to Christmas will begin with the lights switch-on events in South Tyneside’s three town centres.
There are: South Shields Market Square on Wednesday, November 23, from 5pm to 6pm, Jarrow Town Hall, Friday, November 25, from 4pm to 5pm, and Hebburn Fountains Park, Monday, November 28, from 4pm to 5pm.
The sensory centrepiece of celebrations, the spectacular Christmas Parade, returns to Ocean Road, South Shields, on Friday, December 9, choreographed by Creative Seed, and featuring the stunning Spark! Illuminating Ushaw: Land of Enchantment returns for its third year. For the first time, Illuminating Ushaw includes the stunning interior of St. Cuthbert’s Chapel. Enchantingly lit and decorated, this unique experience will be an atmospheric and captivating highlight of the route. The Gardens will also be transformed by new art installations, illuminated features and decorations, creating a Winter Wonderland.
It takes place on Saturday 3rd & Sunday 4th December , Saturday 10th & Sunday 11th December and Friday 16th, Saturday 17th & Sunday 18th December.

Beamish Hall Hotel in Durham opens its doors to a wonderful world of magical illuminations and fantastic lighting displays this festive period, which takes place in the woodland around the venue.
