The Neon Social Club, on Nairn Street, in the town’s Scotch Estate, was demolished in August 2019.
Businessman Tony Singh, who runs Premier Leisure Company and owns the site and several pubs across South Tyneside, has been given planning permission to redevelop the land.
He has been given approval to build 12 two- and three-bedroom properties on the plot.

Plans have been submitted to turn the site into a three-storey, 23-apartment complex on the site and a two-day hearing has been arranged for October to decide on its future.

Its owners had hoped to turn it into a wedding and events venue but were unable to push forward with the proposals.
Since then village campaign group Whitburn Forum has been pushing for residents to have a greater say on its future.
The Grey Horse on Mill Lane, Whitburn, closed at the start of 2019.
It has since been bought by investment company Grey Horse Inn Limited who have revealed plans toconvert the ground floor of the 1840 building into a shop, with two flats created upstairs.
The Victorian era Rose and Crown - also known as The Rosie - at Holborn, South Shields is set to be demolished in September. Located in Hill Street, the building sits next to a stretch of land where the council is undertaking major development works.
Tenants Chris and Karen McKellar took over the running of the pub in August last year, on a two-year lease from the council, that was set to keep the pub open in the short term.
The West Park was situated on Stanhope Road. This pub closed in 2014 and has now been converted to a Sainsburys Local.

The Mariner was on Mortimer Road, South Shields, and closed in early 2017. It's now home to a Co-Op convenience store.

The Lord Clyde on Western Approach, near the junction with Station Road in South Shields.
It closed around 2010 and has since reopened as Bar Blue Bistro.
The Stanhope Hotel on Stanhope Road, South Shields, was closed around 2008. It became an upmarket Tavistock diner in 2011, but closed in 2018.
Now it looks set to become another venue after being taken over by a new owner earlier in 2019.
