The shelter, which was established in 1896, helps animals that are unwanted, neglected, abused and abandoned - as well as reuniting lost animals with their owners and finding loving new homes for those who are no longer wanted.
Here are 17 cute animals who are in need of a home - you can find out more at: https://www.dogandcatshelter.com/.

13. Koda (French Bulldog)
Koda is a lovely little lad who enjoys socialising with his human friends. He’s an enthusiastic boy and even greets strangers as if they’re his best friend! He absolutely loves getting out and about on his walks and also enjoys playing with his toys – particularly balls or soft toys. | Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter
14. Arwen (Staffordshire Bull Terrier Cross)
Arwen is a lovely little lady who absolutely adores spending time with her humans and can be quite demanding for attention! She is full of beans and so will need an active family who can keep up with her and take her on lots of lovely adventures, keeping her both mentally and physically stimulated. | Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter
15. Joker (Lurcher)
Joker is a very confident and friendly lad who really enjoys being around people and getting attention from people. His other favourite things are food and chasing a flirt pole! Joker walked into the shelter without a worry in the world, but does find being in a kennel a little stressful, he is always super grateful when he is brought out for his walks. | Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter
16. DJ
DJ first arrived at the shelter at the beginning of the year after having a stressful time in his previous home where he didn’t get along with the other cat in the home. He didn’t like the cattery at first as it was unfamiliar to him and full of other cats. Once he had a bit more space and time to settle in, he calmed down a lot and revealed his lovely friendly personality (and his love of food!). | Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter
