The shelter, which was established in 1896, helps animals that are unwanted, neglected, abused and abandoned - as well as reuniting lost animals with their owners and finding loving new homes for those who are no longer wanted.
Here are 17 cute animals who are in need of a home - you can find out more at: https://www.dogandcatshelter.com/.

9. Strudel (Lurcher)
Strudel is the most delightful girl who is enthusiastic to make friends with everyone she meets! This enthusiasm can sometimes mean you are greeted with a big hug as she jumps up to say hello. Strudel has been great when meeting other dogs. Though not particularly interested in playing with them, (she would much rather spend all her attention on her humans), she has been well mannered and pleasant in her interactions. | Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter

10. Kermit (Pocket Bully)
Kermit is an absolute superstar. He is a brilliant boy with a personality as big as his smile. He adores his humans and will make friends easily with everyone he meets, happily rolling on his back for some tummy rubs. Kermit has become a firm favourite with the team at the shelter – he is just an absolute pleasure to be around. | Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter

11. Wyatt (Staffordshire Bull Terrier Cross)
Wyatt is a friendly, fun and boisterous lad with the attention span of a goldfish! Although he always means well, Wyatt can get a little over excited at times and can behave in silly ways. | Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter

12. Zippy
Zippy is a big friendly boy who is full of character! He is a very vocal and sociable lad, always chatting away to staff and volunteers – asking for some attention. He enjoys lazing in his cosy bed and can appear a little aloof at times, but he just enjoys taking everything in. | Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter
