‘A great way to buy local’ - New Boldon Night Market becomes a hit with buyers and sellers

A brand new night market in Boldon is proving to be a hit with both buyers and sellers.

The organiser of the new Boldon Night Market has revealed that it has become a hit with the public and traders alike.

The market is designed for local people by involving local small businesses who sell handmade or vintage goods - with the stalls varying on a month basis.

Laurie Scully, from Boldon, set up the market after noticing there was nothing similar in the local area.

‘I want to try and help grow the local economy with it’

The long-time antiques dealer, who has regularly appeared on ITV’s Dickinson’s Real Deal, has revealed that the timing of the market has been a hit with everyone involved.

She said: “I launched it because there is nothing in Boldon like this but I wanted to hold it on an evening because people who are working can come along and it doesn’t eat into their weekend.

“A lot of people have been telling me that they’ve been liking that aspect of it.

“Vendors have been saying that it helps them because they are free most week nights but they’ll be trading at places like South Shields or Tynemouth on a weekend.

“It gives them a way of earning additional incoming without taking away from their weekend trade.

“The other reason is that it helps to keep money in South Tyneside and I want to try and help grow the local economy with it.

“It has become a really nice community event - everyone has been loving it so far.”

Plans for the future

Laurie also revealed that she has plans bring night markets to other South Tyneside areas in the coming months.

She added: “People who are coming to the market are spending money there so there is clearly an outlet for this.

“So I’m looking to start more night markets in other places across South Tyneside in the next few months.

“It has been really rewarding to give vendors a new place to trade and many of them keep coming back so it has obviously made a difference to them.

“I’m really proud to have created a space for both buyers and sellers - it is a great way to encourage people to buy local.”

The Boldon Night Market is held on the first Wednesday of every month at the Boldon Cricket & Squash Club, on Sunderland Road.

There is a £1 admission fee and the market runs from 6.30pm until 9.30pm.
