“I know what it’s like when you can’t get to the games, you don’t have a TV subscription to watch matches and the radio is your link to the game you love,” Matthew said.

“Mick has been the master of Newcastle United commentaries for most of my life and it’s been great working with him. I feel honoured to follow him at such an exciting time in the season with the club sitting five points clear at the top of the championship and in the quarter finals of the EFL cup.”

Lowes said: "I first met Matthew 10 years ago, and over that time I have been nothing but increasingly impressed by his talent and development.

"His knowledge of the game, and especially NUFC, is not only worthy of the chance but more importantly you the fans. You are in good hands!”

BBC Newcastle Editor, Doug Morris, added: “Matthew’s been with the station’s sports team for more than a decade and in that time has covered more than twenty NUFC games as Mick’s deputy. He’s the ideal candidate to follow Mick and take the coverage on in the digital age.”

The radio station has the rights to cover every Newcastle game.
