Armed police called after man is seen carrying blade during South Shields street fight

Armed police were sent to a South Shields street after a man was seen holding a weapon during a street fight between two men.

A number of police vehicles were seen by residents on the junction of Richmond Road and Talbot Road yesterday, Sunday, September 27, with one man arrested as part of inquiries.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: “Shortly before 7.55pm yesterday we received a report of a disturbance involving two males on Richmond Road, South Shields.

“It was reported one of the males had been carrying a bladed article and threatening the other and so as a precaution, officers from our Firearms Support Unit (FSU) attended the scene.

“Officers carried out initial inquiries and conducted a search of a nearby address where they arrested a 45-year-old male on suspicion of affray.

“He remains in police custody assisting with Inquiries at this time.”
