Darren Richardson, 41, of East Moffett Street, South Shields, denied the charge in a hearing at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court.

In a break with normal proceedings, the plea was entered on his behalf by his defence solicitor Val Bell, with Richardson not present.

Magistrates heard Richardson, the owner of the white and brown Staffordshire Bull Terrier, was outside the court but could not attend the 10.45am hearing.

It is alleged the attack happened in Moffett Villas, South Shields, on Monday, May, 25.

Ms Bell said Richardson admitted to being the dog’s owner and to being present at the time the alleged victim was hurt, but denied the dog carried out any attack.

His trial is at the same court on Tuesday, September 29.
