Police were called to Victoria Road West around 11pm on October 17 after a man was found at the side of the road having sustained substantial facial injuries.

Officers say the man could not recall how he had come to suffer the injuries but it is believed that he had been assaulted.

An investigation has been launched and police are appealing for information from anyone who believes they saw what happened – or who might have been walking down the street and seen the injured man.

PC Andrew Readymarcher, of Northumbria Police, said: “The victim was found outside the Army reserves centre with significant injuries to his face that were consistent with having been assaulted.

“The victim will carry some of his injuries for the rest of his life and is understandably anxious as a result of this incident, of which he has no recollection.

“We are continuing to follow a number of lines of enquiry in a bid to ensure anyone responsible is identified and brought to justice, but I am now asking anyone with information that can assist our investigation to come forward.

“I appreciate the incident happened a few weeks ago, but this is a busy street and the man’s injuries were substantial – so we believe someone might have seen something.”

Police are asking anyone with information to contact them via the ‘Tell Us Something’ page of their website or by calling 101 quoting log 1267 171020.
