South Shields bomb disposal update: Arrested man in police custody for third day

A man arrested after emergency services and bomb disposal teams were called to a South Shields street remains in police custody.

The 51-year-old was arrested on Wednesday, January 8 on suspicion of having or making explosives in suspicious circumstances.

This followed an incident in Hathersage Gardens, South Shields, which saw a cordon set up around a property in the street, with police and British Army Bomb Disposal teams called out.

Families were evacuated from their homes for a number of hours on Wednesday while inquiries continued in the area to ensure it was safe.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Defence confirmed it was called in to examine the items, which were later removed from the scene by Northumbria Police.
