South Shields stabbing: Man arrested in connection with attack as victim remains in critical condition

Detectives leading an inquiry into a stab attack which left a man fighting for his life have arrested a man.

Officers and the North East Ambulance Service attended and the victim was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries consistent with a stabbing.

He remains in hospital in a critical but stable condition.

Inquiries into the circumstances around the incident are ongoing.

A 28-year-old woman who was arrested in connection with the assault has now been released with no further action.

Last night officers made a further arrest of a 29-year-old man.

He remains in police custody.

A cordon was put up along a stretch of the shops in the street, leaving a number unable to open up for the day, and also sealed off the back lane behind the businesses as forensics officers carried out checks, including the drains and bin.

A section of the tape was taken down by 10.30am, but police have confirmed the cordon has now been removed entirely.

A spokesperson for the force said: “Officers are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident and there is no wider risk to the public.”

A spokeswoman for the ambulance service confirmed it had sent a double-crewed ambulance, a crew from its Hazardous Area Response Team (Hart) and a doctor to Whiteleas Way, with the patient taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

Residents expressed their shock about the attack as they woke to find the cordon in place on the busy road, with bus passengers asked to use stops elsewhere in the street while police carried out investigations.
