Northumbria Police have charged two men with robbery following an attack on a taxi driver in South Shields.

The incident happened on Saturday, April 11 and saw two men arrested by officers after a taxi driver in the town had more than £100 taken from him.

At around 3am that day, the force received reports that a taxi driver had been attacked and his money stolen on Osborne Avenue, South Shields.

The taxi driver required hospital treatment for the injuries that he sustained in the attack.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police told the Gazette on Thursday, April 30: “The driver, who later brought himself to hospital, reported being assaulted by two male passengers who also stole £130 in cash.

“Two men, aged 30 and 21, have been charged with robbery. They are still in police custody.”
