'Cruel condition' - Hebburn woman set to take on 84-mile walk in honour of her nana who battled dementia

A woman is set to walk the entire length of Hadrian’s Wall to raise money for Dementia UK in memory of her nana.

A Hebburn woman is preparing to undertake an 84-mile walk along Hadrian’s Wall as she looks to raise vital funds for Dementia UK.

Megan Robson lost her nana, Brenda, to the illness back in 2018 and is now wanting to support the work that the charity does for people across the country.

The 24-year-old will set off on her coast-to-coast walk on Monday, September 21, as she looks to honour Brenda’s memory through the challenge.

‘My nana is a big miss to everyone who knew her’

Megan has explained what it is like to see a close family member battle dementia and stated that her nana would be “proud” of her for taking on the challenge.

She said: “I wanted to challenge myself with something that I’ve never done before while raising money and awareness for a charity that obviously means a lot to me.

“Experiencing someone that you’ve known and loved deteriorate due this cruel condition is heart breaking - it definitely had a massive impact on myself and my family.

“My nana is a big miss to everyone who knew her and she would be proud of me doing this.

“She was always at anything that I’d do and I know that she would have been at Segedunum waiting for me to cross the finish line.”

‘Every penny makes a huge difference’

Megan has given an insight into how training for the walk is going and revealed how she’d feel if she hit her fundraising target of £300.

She added: “Training is going well but it is definitely nothing in comparison to walking 84 miles.

“I’ve started with smaller hikes and now I’m trying to build up the distance, as well as getting used to back-to-back walking.

“I’m trying to walk 15 miles and then get up and do the same thing the next day.

“It would mean everything to me to hit the £300 target because I know that every penny makes a huge difference to Dementia UK.

“The money goes towards vital research and one-to-one support via Admiral Nurses so I know that £300 would make a huge difference to families who are going through the same thing we went through.”
