Hit-and-run Boldon danger driver has sentencing date delayed

A man who left a biker lying helpless in the road after a hit-and-run crash in Boldon has had his sentencing date delayed.

Daniel Andrews, of Sidney Street, Boldon Colliery, admitted causing serious injury after driving dangerously at South Tyneside Magistrates' Court earlier this month.

The 23-year-old, who was already serving a road ban, had no insurance and is subjected to a suspended prison sentence, was driving at more than 60mph on the wrong side of the road and had driven through a red light when he ploughed into the back of Simon Carter’s Yamaha WR125 motorcycle in New Road, Boldon Colliery, on December 13.

The victim had his pelvis broken in two places, fractured his collarbone and spent 13 days in hospital after the smash in New Road, Boldon Colliery, on December 13.

Andrews fled the scene on foot but was tracked down after police found a McDonald's receipt in his abandoned Ford Mondeo and viewed CCTV footage from the drive-thru of the fast food chain's branch in Newcastle Road, South Shields.

Andrews appeared at Newcastle Crown Court via video link from Durham Prison today.

He had had been due to be sentenced after pleading guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving but the case was adjourned.

Bridie Smurthwaite, prosecuting said that Andrews will appear back at Newcastle Crown Court on April 4.
