Isle Of Wight environmental campaigners urge South Tyneside residents to sign nurdle petition

A petition is looking to encourage the safe movement of nurdles through Government policy.

An environmental campaign group from 300 miles away are encouraging South Tyneside residents to sign a petition to bring the UK in line with the EU on the safe use of plastic pellets.

An estimated 25 tonnes of pellets, known as nurdles, spilled into the River Tyne on Sunday, July 19 after a collision at the Port Of Tyne.

As a result, white pellets have continued to wash up onto North East beaches including South Shields’ Littlehaven Beach.

Planet Aware, an environmental group based on the Isle Of Wight off England’s south coast has encouraged North East residents to sign a petition encouraging legislation which would change the laws surrounding how nurdles are stored and transported.

They suggest the UK should bring the law in line with the European Union which mandates risk management plans and independent audits for large handlers.

A Government petition is available to be signed online.
