‘It’s a crucial role’ - South Tyneside's 2026 Poppy Appeal faces 'organiser shortage'

There is a particular shortage of Poppy Appeal volunteers in Hebburn.

The Royal British Legion (RBL) needs volunteers to run its annual Poppy Appeal in South Tyneside, particularly in Hebburn.

The appeal raises vital funds to help veterans and other members of the Armed Forces community who have served their country.

People willing to give their time to sell poppies and collect money are welcome, but what is needed above all are people to organise volunteers and ensure the appeal runs smoothly.

The RBL says there is a particular shortage of organisers in Hebburn. It takes more than 3,500 dedicated volunteers to help deliver the appeal each year.

Poppies will be available from Thursday, October 22 at places like supermarkets, shops, railway stations or online. Armistice Day is Wednesday, November 11 with Remembrance Sunday three days earlier. Volunteers are given training beforehand.

‘It’s a crucial role’

A Legion spokesperson said: “Getting more Poppy Appeal organisers is key to us.

“We have issues in Hebburn and Gateshead with organisers. We have people willing to collect in supermarkets and other places for a couple of hours a day. That suits a lot of people.

“But if you want a more active part in the appeal, we’re looking for organisers. It’s a crucial role.

“This entails organising the volunteers. It’s really then looking at the areas on the patch where volunteers can be allocated, who would be most appropriate for those areas, making sure there’s cover right through the appeal.

“It lasts a fortnight and is quite an intensive period. It’s quite a big responsibility, but it’s something that could suit someone with a bit of time.”

‘We would love to have you as a Poppy Appeal organiser’

Steven Wilson, the Poppy Appeal manager for the Royal British Legion, added: “We would encourage anyone who is interested in volunteering for the Poppy Appeal to get in touch with us to find out more.

“If you are looking for a more active part in the Appeal, we would love to have you as a Poppy Appeal organiser.

“This role is crucial to delivering the appeal and organising a team of dedicated volunteers. You will be fully supported in the role, including training before the Poppy Appeal.

“Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, support your community and build your skills.”
