Former Newcastle United & Everton striker makes Matthias Jaissle plea ahead of Carabao Cup clash

Former Newcastle United striker Duncan Ferguson has given his verdict on Magpies head coach Matthias Jaissle.

Former Newcastle United striker Duncan Ferguson has called for patience to be shown towards Magpies head coach Matthias Jaissle.

The former Al-Ahli and RB Salzburg boss has experienced mixed fortunes during the opening three months of his St James Park reign with wins against the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Hull City sitting alongside deeply disappointing defeats against Leeds United, Coventry City and Aston Villa.

But the side got a reaction with a much-needed 2-0 win at Crystal Palace on Sunday to move back into the top half.

Jaissle’s tactical approach and team selection throughout the early days of his reign has provoked major debate online and there have been questions over Newcastle’s identity as they struggle to find consistency in performance and results under their new German head coach.

With a double header against Everton and a visit to Fulham lying in wait ahead of the second international break of the season, Jaissle will hope to spark an upturn in fortunes before thoughts turn towards the always crucial festive period. Former Magpies striker Ferguson, who has recently returned to the dugout with Northern Irish club Glentoran, believes pressure has raised on Jaissle ‘too quickly’ and called for the United boss to be given ‘a bit of time’ as he looks to make an impact during his first season on Tyneside.

He told GiveMeSport: "I like Eddie Howe. He was a great, great manager. Done a lot of things, got a lot of experience. Look, you just got to give managers a bit of time, haven't you? End of the day, I know nobody gets time now, a few bad results, and before you know it...

"Look what happened to Mikel at Arsenal. They gave him a bit of time. Look what happened to Sir Alex Ferguson at Man United. They gave him a bit of time. Give the managers a bit of time. That's all we need. But of course, there's no time now anywhere. Nobody's got any patience now. And fans and social media and managers are coming under a lot of pressure very, very quickly. But give the guy a chance. That's all I would say."
