Jarrow school gives foodback a boost

Clervaux Nursery School in Jarrow began collecting items after headteacher Michelle Dixon saw a post on social media.

New Hope Church had launched an appeal with a wish list of items they were in desperate need of to enable them to put together food parcels.

Mrs Dixon said: “Whenever we have a harvest festival we always collect for the foodbank. I saw a post on Facebook where an appeal had been launched with a wish list of items.

“I printed the list out and handed it to our parents and the response was fantastic.

“They are really generous. One of our parents is a community champion at Sainsbury’s and really helped with the donation – they are all really amazing.”

The school has been organising collections for the foodbank for the past four years.

Mrs Dixon added: “The children understand that not everyone is as lucky as them and not everyone’s parents has money to buy food.

“And we feel it is important for the children to see where the donations they are collecting are going to and that it is a good cause they are helping.”

Deputy Mayor of South Tyneside Alan Smith was at the handover of the donations to a representative from New Hope Church.

He said “I am pleased to be handing over the groceries to the Churches Together Food Bank because I know that some people in the borough desperately need these provisions. I would also like to thank the staff and parents of Clervaux Nursery School for their generous donations.”
