Premier League issue Newcastle United official statement following Fulham controversy

Newcastle United had to settle for a point on the road at Fulham.

Dan Burn had a goal ruled out for Newcastle United in the 1-1 draw at Fulham on Saturday afternoon.

The Magpies captain thought he’d given the away side the lead against his former club at Craven Cottage with a close range finish from Jacob Murphy’s cross only for referee Rob Jones to rule out the goal for an off-the-ball foul by Yoane Wissa on Timothy Castagne

With Burn clearly onside and unaware of any foul, he ran away in celebration only to be left puzzled as to why his goal did not stand.

The goal was subject to a VAR check, which upheld the on-field decision made by the match officials as the score remained 0-0.

The Premier League Match Centre then issued a short statement explaining the decision.

“The referee’s call of no goal to Newcastle United was checked and confirmed by VAR – with it deemed that Wissa fouled Castagne in the build-up,” the statement read. “AR2: ‘Defensive foul at the back post. Wissa holding at the back post’. REF: ‘Castagne held back by Wissa. It’s a deliberate foul’. VAR: ‘He's clearly holding him - confirming the on-field decision of defensive free-kick. Wissa is clearly making an attempt to hold the Fulham defender. Clear holding offence’.”

Newcastle took the lead in the closing stages of the match through a fine strike from distance by Jacob Murphy. But their lead lasted only a matter of minutes before substitute Rodrigo Muniz drew the hosts level with a close-range finish as the match ended 1-1.
