Learners group visit Jarrow town hall

Those who attend sessions run by the WEA (Workers Educational Association) were taken on a tour of Jarrow Town Hall.

The visit was led by the Mayor and Mayoress of South Tyneside Coun Richard Porthouse and his wife Patricia.

The group, who attend English sessions run by Pam Davis, held at Action Stations in Boldon Lane, South Shields, were able to ask the Mayor questions about his role as well as highlight the activities they do as part of the WEA.

The group also mentioned how they had taken part in a range of fundraising activities raising £160 for Luke’s Life Legac, which supports families of children diagnosed with a brain tumour.

Susan Heptinstall, course organiser for South Tyneside WEA, said: “The WEA takes learning out into the community basing classes in community venues like Action Stations. We also offer a wide range of courses.

“Those who visited the town hall were from our English class, the visit was already arranged and our students thought it would be a good idea to present the money they raised for the charity to a representative.”

The WEA is a national charity and education provider which runs a range of courses within communities.

The courses aim to help to improve people’s health and wellbeing and help to achieve their personal goals.

The charity relies on volunteers and is currently on the lookout for anyone who would like to offer their time to support the WEA.
