Man told police ‘I just hit her a couple of times’ after assaulting his partner in Jarrow

A man who caused injuries to his partner’s head, nose and mouth in a Jarrow attack told police had “just hit her a couple of times”.

A brute told police "I didn't assault her, I just hit her a couple of times on the head" after a shocking attack on his partner.

Officers had been called to a property in Jarrow last August and found a woman on a sofa with injuries to her head, nose and mouth.

Newcastle Crown Court heard she said she had been assaulted by her partner Lee Jackson, who had punched her to the top of the head several times and used a battery pack to hit her with.

Prosecutor Claire Anderson said the victim then refused to provide a formal statement.

Miss Anderson said Jackson was arrested and told the court: "He said 'I didn't assault her, I just hit her a couple of times on the head'."

Jackson, 56, of Chiltern Road, Bishop Auckland, County Durham, pleaded guilty to assault.

Recorder Tony Hawks said Jackson suffered a serious brain injury as a teenager and has stayed out of trouble for most of his life.

The recorder told Jackson: "Any assault on a woman is a cowardly and despicable thing to do. I don't know what the reason for it was but there is no excuse for it.

"You attacked her and punched her repeatedly about the head."

Jackson was sentenced to six months, suspended for 18 months, with rehabilitation requirements.
