Meet the 90-year-old South Shields lady who is ‘buzzing’ to be a great-great-grandmother
A South Shields family is celebrating welcoming its fifth living generation.
The Wemyss family, from South Shields, have five living generations ranging from as young as three-months-old all the way to up 90-years-old.
The family generations stem down from 90-year-old great-great grandmother, Mavis O’Brian, to 71-year-old great-grandmother, Susan Metcalf, to grandmother Michelle Wemyss, 46, then to Michelle’s 23-year-old son Liam Wemyss and finally three-month-old Carter Wemyss.
It means that Mavis has four grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson - with another one the way.
Michelle has explained to the Shields Gazette what it is like having five generations of the same family still alive.

She commented: “We never really thought about it as a big deal.
“It wasn’t until someone actually pointed that we still have five generations alive did we actually realise how unique it was.
“It’s only when you start speaking to people and realise that most families have three generations or four at a max so it’s just wonderful.”
Michelle has also revealed that Mavis is loving life as a great-great-grandmother, highlighting that she can’t do enough to try and help out the younger generations of her family.
She added: “My grandma is bonkers but she is just full of life and the happiest woman alive, I think that’s why she is thriving.
“She would do anything for anyone, she is my hero.
“She is loving being a great-great-grandma, she is just buzzing and she has another great-great-grandson due in six weeks time - she has just embraced it.
“Her neighbours have been knitting hats, she just can’t do enough - she would decorate the whole nursery if she could.”
