New glass canopy and roof for South Shields Crematorium

A new-look South Shields Crematorium is taking shape.

This month sees the unveiling of a new glass canopy and roofing system for the 1960s building in John Reid Road.

The roofing improvements have included replacing the existing roof and the installation of a large steel and glass canopy at the main door.

The canopy will help provide better shelter for bereaved families and friends as they gather outside the entrance of the crematorium ahead of funeral services. Work will soon begin to boost the number of parking spaces available within the grounds, with more than 30 additional bays being created, including disabled parking.

The council is also upgrading the audio system.

Councillor Tracey Dixon, lead member for area management and community safety, said: “I’m delighted that work is progressing well and residents can now see the initial development of the crematorium.”
