North East Mayor pledges £50,000 to Durham Miner's Gala

North East Mayor Kim McGuinness has given funding support to the Durham Miner’s Gala.

One of the North’s most famous events is to receive support this year as part of North East Mayor Kim McGuinness’ programme of funding for community celebrations and festivals.

The Miners’ Gala taking place this weekend will see up to 200,000 people from towns and villages across Durham and the wider North East flock to the historic city’s streets to see the free annual parade and brass bands.

The North East Mayoral Strategic Authority is to provide £50,000 funding which will go towards essential security measures, medical and site services including toilets and infrastructure needed around the parade itself.

The Durham Miners’ Gala has been staged in the city since 1871 and is estimated to bring £10 million into the local economy each year, as people spend money in local shops, pubs, restaurants and places to stay.
