Oops! Sunderland 'knocked out of the cup' by BBC while Newcastle progress
The mistake was repeated in 8am bulletin, while the 8.30am version did not correct it.
There was an embarrassing moment for the BBC Look North team when its Breakfast bulletin wrongly said that Sunderland had been knocked out of the EFL Cup.
The bulletin, at 7.30am on Thursday, September 17, led with a piece on the club’s 1-0 victory over Dutch side AZ Alkmaar the previous evening in their first Europa League fixture, including brief interviews with happy supporters outside the Stadium of Light.
But presenter Steph Cleasby then announced: “One other piece of football news, Newcastle will play away at Everton in the next round of the League Cup. The draw for the fourth round was made last night.”
This was perfectly correct. Newcastle United won at Millwall in the third round.
However, she then added: “The Magpies are the region’s only side in the competition.”
This raised a few eyebrows among Sunderland fans, whose team play at home to Brentford in the fourth round, having beat Hull City in the third.
The mistake was repeated in 8am bulletin, while the 8.30am version did not correct it.
The Gazette understands that these things happen.
