Our gym’s members are aiming to lift 100,000kg in just six hours

A South Tyneside gym is set to take on a gruelling fitness challenge.

On Saturday, March 21, 42 members at Black Sheep Fitness Academy, on Shaftesbury Avenue, in Jarrow, will be taking on ‘The Herculean’ in honour of two causes close to the gym’s heart.

Working in teams of two, those taking part will be working for an hour each of deadlifts, chest press, seated press as they look to lift a combined total of 100,000kg within six hours.

The event will be raising money for the Chloe & Liam Together Forever Trust, with £3,000 having already been raised for the charity attend of any weights being lifted.

The Chloe & Liam Together Forever Trust was set up by the families of Chloe Rutherford and Liam Curry, a young couple from South Shields, who tragically lost their lives in the Manchester Arena terror attack in 2017.

The charity’s aim is to honour Chloe and Liam’s love and talent in performing arts and sports.

‘The Herculean’ will also be taken on in memory of legendary barber Allan Stone, who was a member at Black Sheep Fitness Academy.

Allan, who passed away at the age of 46 in 2021, was much-loved across South Tyneside - with his Stoney’s Barber Shop being a long-term fixture on Laygate Lane, in South Shields.

A statement on the Black Sheep Fitness Academy Facebook page said: “42 Black Sheep members will step onto that floor in pairs, ready to chip away at an unbelievable 100,000kg total.

“Every lift, every rep, every moment will be in honour of Stoney and in support of the Chloe & Liam Together Forever Trust, a cause that sits right at the centre of our community.

“This challenge isn’t just physical. It’s emotional.

“And once again, we’re proud to be backed by our Herculean sponsor, NorthStandard.

“Their generosity means every athlete will be kitted out in a sponsored Herculean t-shirt, a small detail that makes a massive difference to team spirit on the day.

“We’re grateful to have them standing with us as we push towards something bigger than any one person.”
