Newcastle United legend David Ginola visited The People’s Kitchen during a trip to Tyneside to learn more about their work with the city’s vulnerable and homeless.

Formed in 1985, the Newcastle charity has supported those who need its help with food and friendship.

Now, the Kitchen has more than 230 unpaid volunteers and dishes up 40,000 hot meals per year.

Teresa Turnbull, volunteer team leader at the People’s Kitchen, said: “David was really interested in our work and told us about the work of an equivalent organisation in his home town in France.

“We were all delighted to meet him.”

Ginola made 58 appearances for the Toon Army between 1995 and 1997.

He also visited the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, the Cardiac Unit at the Freeman Hospital and Newcastle University during his trip.
