The by-election follows the dramatic resignation of independent councillor and former opposition leader John Robertson in June 2021.
Although Mr Robertson attempted to retract his resignation, he was told this was not possible under rules governing councils.
As a result, South Tyneside Council scheduled a by-election for Thursday, July 29 to fill the vacancy.
Candidates from the Labour Party, Conservative Party, Green Party, Liberal Democrats Party and former ward representative, John Robertson, have all thrown their hats in the ring in the contest.
In the run-up to election day, candidates have been given the opportunity to tell you why you should vote for them.

I have an exciting and unexpected opportunity to represent you. A ward resident for 52 years, married to Michelle. I am passionate and actively involved in our community. I’ve supported our residents in delivering food parcels from Murray’s foodbank and via Hedworthfield CA, gifts and hampers, to make Christmas special for some of our residents. I understand family challenges and it was a pleasure to help. Our CA is an excellent asset and I will continue to promote it. I walk the ward daily with Milo, my dog, raising issues as I go. I value our local businesses and support them daily. I stand with our residents in protecting our green belt from unwanted development. What matters to the residents matters to me.
