Shields Ferry increse staff numbers after crew availability issues

Shields Ferry services have returned to normal after bringing in new staff.

The Shields Ferry operating team has increased in size after staff availability issues which have impacted customers.

Services between South Shields and the North Shields Fish Quay returned to a normal timetable from Monday, July 20 after a series of crossings were cancelled.

A full update to customers from the team operating the Shields Ferry said: “We have worked hard to address the issue, and three new members of crew have been taken on.

“From Monday 20 July, the first weekday and Saturday crossings from South Shields will now leave at 6.45am, instead of 7.15am.

“Evening journeys will also return to their full normal timetable that week, operating until 8pm on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesdays, 10.50pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and 6pm on Sundays.

“Thanks to customers for your patience during the disruption.”

It has been a tough year for the Shields Ferry after it was taken out of action in January due to storm damage to the service’s north landing. Crossings resumed after a nearly three month period at the end of April.

Replacement services saw shuttle buses run between the two landings on either side of the River Tyne.

As part of their services over the coming weeks, staff will also be offering free gifts to passengers throughout the summer holidays. This will happen every Monday between 11am and 3pm until the end of August.

The ferry runs from South Shields every 30 minutes, departing at 15 and 45 minutes past the hour.
