South Shields thief gets national ban from all Asda and Tesco stores after crime spree.

A South Tyneside thief has been temporarily banned from a Wearside shopping centre and every Asda and Tesco in the land after pinching over £1,210 of goods.

Dean Kelly, 37, was ordered to stay away by magistrates until he is later sentenced after he appeared before them to admit an eight-theft spree over almost two months.

Kelly, of Whitehead Street, Tyne Dock, South Shields, began by stealing £60 of toothpaste gel and deodorant from a branch of The Range on Tuesday, April 28.

He struck again on Thursday, May 14, swiping £33.90 of coffee and meat from a Tesco in his home town.

The offender then turned his attention to Asda, taking a total of £1,121 of stock in six thefts, South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court heard.

In all, he made off with £906 of items from the retailer’s outlet at the Galleries, Washington, while committing four shoplifting offences.

Kelly first stole from that store on Wednesday, May 20, taking a £200 Shark vacuum cleaner without paying.

He returned on Sunday, May 14, when he made off with a Polaroid television and seven bottles of Jack Daniels booze, totalling £278.

And he struck again four days later, taking a £178 TV, and his final crime there was on Thursday, June 18, when he stole a £250 Philips OneBlade hair trimmer.

Kelly also swiped £215 of goods in two shoplifting crimes from the firm’s New Road store in Boldon Colliery.

On Monday, June 1, he pinched a £120 television, and the following day, a quantity of whisky, valued at £95.

He pleaded guilty to eight counts of theft from a shop and had his case adjourned for an assessment of his mental health.

Bail granted

Prosecutor Mariam Odetoro did not address the court but David Forrester, defending, said: “Mr Kelly is a man of multiple previous convictions for shoplifting.

“He’s not currently subject to an order but there is a need for mental health treatment. The request is a simple adjournment for an all-options report.”

Magistrates adjourned for reports and Kelly will be sentenced at the same court on Tuesday, August 4.

He was granted bail on condition he does not enter the Galleries or any branch of Asda or Tesco.
