Suzanne Jackson has joined forces with other families of youngsters who have additional needs - including autism, learning difficulties and other disabilities.

Together they have launched Waves - which will be based at the Bilton Hall CIO centre in Low Simonside, South Shields.

The group aims to provide a place where children and young people up to the age of 25, and their siblings can take part in activities and where their families can receive support, advice and guidance.

Mrs Jackson said: “It’s something as parents we all felt was needed as there is not enough support out there for the family unit as a whole.

“The sessions on a Saturday will be a drop-in, so people don’t need to feel like they need to attend week in and week out.

“We know how difficult it can be to come along to new groups and they don’t have to wait until they have a diagnosis, they can just be going through the assessment process.”

A range of activities will be available for the group to take part in during the Saturday afternoon sessions.

A night to officially launch the group will take place on Friday at the Whiteleas Social Club.

Doors open at 7pm and is free entry.

The event will give families a chance to meet the volunteers running the group and to find out more about what’s on offer.
