The bid, believed to be from local rivals Middlesbrough, has been reported to be around the £5m mark.

One of the shining lights in the Black Cats' dismal 2017/18 campaign, McNair has attracted no shortage of interest this summer with Premier League outfits Brighton and Wolves also keen.

Sunderland were keen to keep hold of the former Manchester United man but McNair has made no secret of his desire to play at a higher level.

Speaking on international duty recently, McNair said: "If I can get back to the Premier League, that would be great, but I just want to concentrate on these Northern Ireland games and look at that afterwards.”

While Championship outfit Boro look to be in pole position for now, Brighton could come back with another bid for the Northern Irish international having already been knocked back once this summer.
