Hundreds of people helped raise thousands of pounds to fight cancer at an annual charity relay.
Saturday’s Relay for Life event at the Monkton Stadium, in Jarrow, has already generated at least £70,000 for Cancer Research UK.
Organiser Ann Walsh said: “Things have gone really well. We have had a really good turnout.
“But it is a bit weird having Christmas in the middle of July, with a 15ft Christmas tree on the stage.
“We have 43 teams taking part and 595 people signed up. Within those, we have 60 survivors of cancer.
“This year, we set our target for £80,000 and we had already raised £70,000 before we started.
“It is such a fantastic event and to have so many people turn out is amazing, as we were competing against the football, the Tall Ships and Durham Miners Gala.

“It just gets better and better each year.”
The relay event, which closes with a candle ceremony, is a 24-hour fundraiser which helps to raise much-needed cash.
It sees people walk the route of the stadium’s race track throughout the duration as part of a relay team.
They are entertained throughout the day and night by singers and bands.
