FA Vase: Boldon CA already relishing first round tie with local rivals Jarrow

South Tyneside neighbours Boldon CA and Jarrow will face off in a historic FA Vase first round tie in October.

Boldon CA joint-manager Chris Spence is already relishing a big occasion after his side were paired with South Tyneside rivals Jarrow in the FA Vase first round draw.

Boldon created a little piece of club history on Sunday afternoon when they claimed a 3-0 win at Northern Counties East League Premier Division side Campion thanks to goals from Callum Larmouth, Mark Robinson and Thomas Hunter. That was enough to take The Villa outfit into the first round of the competition for the first time in 46 years and they now know their local rivals stand in their way as they look to progress into the second round of the Vase for the first time since 1978.

Speaking after his side were handed a home tie against Kennie Malia’s men, Spence admitted he had joked a local derby was certain to happen before the draw took place on Monday afternoon.

He told The Gazette: “It’s huge a local derby with a bit more at stake now. We joked before the draw, ‘watch us get Jarrow’, and it’s going to be a cracker. Both teams have started well in the league and progressed into the first round of the Vase so it’s really shaping up to be a great game.”

‘An extra special day’

After dumping step four opposition out of the Vase with a 2-1 home win against Longridge Town in the previous round, Boldon produced more heroics this weekend as they claimed a comfortable victory against a Campion side that are sat within striking distance of the NCEL Premier Division play-off places.

Spence described the historic win as ‘an extra special day for the club’ and paid tribute to a largely new look Boldon squad for racking up some an impressive achievement.

He said: “We were absolutely buzzing. It was a great day for the lads and just what they deserved. I’m hearing it’s the first time in around 50 years that the club has got into the first round proper so it makes it an extra special day for the club and everyone involved.
