Hebburn Town have 'nine cup finals' ahead in historic promotion chase - Moore

Hebburn Town will host Northern Premier League rivals Gainsborough Trinity on Saturday afternoon.

Hebburn Town manager Daniel Moore believes his promotion chasing side are preparing for ‘nine cup finals’ as they look to write their name into Hornets history books once again.

Moore’s men became the first Hebburn side to take the club into the Northern Premier League Premier Division when they won the East Division title just over two years ago - and now they are eyeing another historic promotion into the National League North.

Another goal from top scorer Gary Martin and a late brace from on-loan Sunderland prospect Jake Waters helped the Hornets to a 3-0 win against Stocksbridge Park Steels and that was enough to lift them to the top of the table. A home game against Gainsborough Trinity is next on the agenda on Saturday afternoon - and Moore wants his players to lay solid foundations for a final push for promotion on their home patch.

He told The Gazette: “We spoke about it before the game on Tuesday. We’ve done well in games but I think some of those tough away games we have had recently have taken it out of the players a little bit. We’ve tried to look after them, we freshened it up in the last two games. I think we deserved something out of the game on Saturday and we got something on Tuesday night.

“The younger players are bringing energy into the side and we just need to start again. We have nine cup finals, we just need have a nine-game season and see where it takes us. There’s no pressure on us, what will be will be. We just need to try and win every home game and if we do that I don’t think we will be miles away. Obviously, it will be a very big ask because we have some challenging games left to play but we will certainly have a very good go at it.”

Moore could consider handing a first start to Sunderland youngster Waters following his goalscoring exploits against Stocksbridge in midweek. The likes of Joao Gomes and Olly Martin could also come into contention after they came off the bench in the second half of that win.
