Jarrow Roofing's collapse sees Whitley Bay take points

The first half was relatively uneventful, with Roofing keeping possession well, but neither side were able to find the required final ball.

The best chance of the opening 45 minutes did fall the way of the home side when, on 16 minutes, new man Michael MacKay worked his way from the left wing into the penalty area, but saw his square ball cleared behind for a corner.

The second half began in controversial fashion when Paul Kane, one of Bay’s half-time substitutes, was shown a straight red card just eight minutes after coming onto the pitch for what later transpired to be foul and abusive language directed towards the referee following a heavy tackle on half-way.

Despite their man advantage, Roofing appeared to lose any hold in the game at that point as passing became sloppy and the visitors started to create more opportunities.

The Seahorses broke the deadlock on 71 minutes when Chris McDonald found himself in space on the corner of the penalty area and unleashed a rocket into the top right corner of Dan Regan’s net.

The final 10 minutes saw a number of chances for Roofing to snatch a point, including a superb stop from Bay goalkeeper Gladstone to tip a Michael Coghlan free-kick from the edge of the box just around the post.

However, the final word went the way of the visitors as a free-kick in the fourth minute of injury time fell to man of the match Alex Kempster, his shot was parried by Regan only for the Roofing stopper to see Adam Shanks arrive and tuck the rebound away.

For Roofing, there is still work to do ahead of the end of the season, with the side sitting just above the Northern League relegation places.

Next up for Richie McLoughlin’s men is a trip to tenth placed North Shields on Wednesday in a 7.30pm kick-off.
