Jarrow stand firm against high-flying Stockton Town

Stockton Town, who had dropped only five points in their previous 20 games, were odds-on favourites to defeat bottom-half-of-the-table Jarrow.

However, the South Tynesiders fully deserved the point.

Both teams were evenly matched in the first half, but Stockton did have the ball in the net.

However, the goal disallowed after the Stockton player was judged to have fouled Gary Frater.

Jarrow did go close when Stevie Graham hit the crossbar from a free-kick.

Frater made an excellent stop from a shot just inside the box and both Brodie Simpson and Darren Morton came close to giving Jarrow the lead.

Jarrow held their opponents at bay and frustrated throughout, but the result was deemed fair.

David Bell said after the game: “To achieve a result against the best team in the league and keep a clean sheet when they have scored 98 league goals in 20 games prior to this game, is a great achievement for us.

“We knew we had to have full commitment to this game and everyone involved, the 11 that started, the substitutes we used and those that did not get used to those not in the squad were absolutely brilliant.

“Our defending was excellent and we were very good when we attacked, creating a number of chances.

“The result was well deserved.

“I must pay credit to everyone of our lads for their effort and the way they played.

“The challenge now for us is get that consistency in every game as we look to climb up the table.”
