Liam Murray backed to shine after signing new Hebburn Town deal

The versatile midfielder has signed a new deal with the National League North newcomers.

Liam Murray has been backed to make the step up into the National League North after agreeing a new deal with Hebburn Town.

The versatile midfielder has become one of the most impressive aspects of the Hornets rise from Northern League club to the second tier of the non-league game after initially gaining senior experience with the club’s second string in the Northern Alliance. A product of the club’s junior system, Murray also featured for Northern League neighbours Jarrow during the early years of his career - but has firmly established himself in Daniel Moore’s squad in recent seasons.

After featuring heavily throughout Hebburn’s shock Northern Premier League Premier Division title win last season, Murray will now prepare to take on the likes of South Shields, Darlington and Hereford in step two - and Hornets manager Moore has insisted he can ‘kick on’ and make a real impact at a higher level.

He told The Gazette: “Liam has had three years where we have been trying to coax it out of him because we just wanted him to believe in himself a bit more. He’s fast, he’s strong, he’s got a football brain. He loves the game, I say that about him, he just loves it and he’s like a kid at times. He still is a kid really but when we first saw him in our first session at Hebburn, we knew he was coming in from the reserves and he has been with us every step of the way since.

“He’s gone from the Northern Alliance to National League North and it’s a massive jump but he understands that. He is working hard to give himself an opportunity and I think he could kick on and play professional football and if we can do that for him then it’s happy days for us because if any lads can go and do bigger things, it’s good for the club. But we want to keep Muzza around because we’ve had these lads for what is coming up to five years and we try and look after them.”
