A nine game unbeaten run between December 2021 and March 2022 thrust Eddie Howe’s Magpies up to 14th in the Premier League table with 31 points.
But back-to-back defeats at Chelsea and Everton has brought the club back down to earth slightly heading into the international break.
Newcastle can be safe in the knowledge that the vast majority of teams who have picked up 31 or more points from their opening 29 games in the Premier League have survived.
But there has been occasions where teams have still been relegated despite being in a similar, or stronger, position to what Newcastle currently find themselves in – nine to be exact.

9. 1992-93: Crystal Palace - 33 points
Crystal Palace won all five of their Premier League matches in December to seemingly climb out of relegation trouble heading into the second half of the season. After 29 matches, they had accumulated 33 points and would go on to pick up another 16 points from their final 13 games to finish the campaign on 49 points. Amazingly, this wasn't enough to ensure survival as they finished 20th and were relegated on goal difference. Their 49 point total is a record for a relegated team in the Premier League and a joint record for any top flight team to be relegated in England. Photo: Getty Images

10. What about Newcastle?
Despite back to back defeats and what previous records suggest, it's not the time for doom and gloom at Newcastle. Their 31 point total with nine games remaining is a very respectable one given where the club was at the midway point in the season. Newcastle are by no means safe just yet and history suggests it is still entirely possible to go down with a bad run of form over the next nine games. But it has been over a decade since a team who had picked up more than 30 points at this stage in the season has been relegg ated. In that time, the average points required to stay in the division has dropped and we look to be heading towards another low survival total this year. Potentially another win or two could be enough for Eddie Howe's side. Photo: Stu Forster
