Bruno Guimaraes helped Brazil edge through to the quarter-finals of the Copa America with a 1-1 draw against Colombia.

Raphinha’s early Brazil goal was cancelled out by Colombia’s Daniel Munoz on the stroke of half-time. The match finished level to confirm Colombia’s progress as group winners while Brazil finished as runners-up.

Brazil’s failure to win means they now face an in-form Uruguay side in the quarter-final instead of heavy underdogs Panama, who will face Colombia. Guimaraes was booked during the match for a foul on James Rodriguez.

Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior was also booked in the match, resulting in his suspension for the Uruguay match on Saturday.

It has been a frustrating period for Brazil, who have won just one of their last seven competitive fixtures heading into the quarter-final. Brazil’s only competitive win since September 2023 was a 4-1 victory over Paraguay last week.

Added with draws against Costa Rica and Colombia, it was just enough to see the five-time world champions progress to the last eight.

Meanwhile, Miguel Almiron’s Paraguay ended a disappointing Copa America with a 2-1 defeat to Costa Rica, leaving them bottom of the group on zero points. Almiron started the game but was booked and withdrawn at half-time with Paraguay trailing 2-0 and already knocked out.

Ramon Sosa pulled a goal back for Paraguay in the second half.

While Guimaraes’ return to Newcastle is delayed by Brazil’s progress, Almiron will be given a break before returning to pre-season training later this month.

The 30-year-old winger is facing an uncertain future at St James’ Park with Newcastle currently in talks with a Saudi Pro League club regarding a potential summer transfer.
