Newcastle United secured another big Champions League win at St James’ Park as they beat PSV Eindhoven 3-0 on Wednesday night.

Yoane Wissa, Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes found the net to secure a comfortable victory for Eddie Howe’s side, one that guarantees a top 24 finish and progress to the next stage of the competition.

The win also takes Newcastle up to seventh in the Champions League group heading into next week’s final group match against holders Paris Saint-Germain.

But they could be without captain Bruno Guimaraes for the match after he limped off with an ankle injury during the win over PSV.

Bruno Guimaraes suffers ankle injury

Providing an update on Guimaraes’ injury after the match, Howe said: “Yeah, a little bit sore, it's an ankle problem, a little bit of swelling in his ankle having just seen him.

“We hope it's not serious, difficult to know.I think Bruno's the type of player that never wants to come off, he always wants to play, so the fact he has come off is a worry for us.

“We'll do everything we can to get him fit as quickly as possible.”

Kieran Trippier wore the captain’s armband following Guimaraes’ withdrawal before handing the armband to 19-year-old Lewis Miley following his withdrawal in the closing stages.

Newcastle United secure progress in the Champions League

Newcastle bounced back from a 2-1 defeat at Marseille and late 2-2 draw with Bayer Leverkusen to grab their fourth win and clean sheet in seven Champions League matches this season.

The Magpies head into the final matchday on 13 points with a healthy +10 goal difference having picked up convincing wins over Union Saint-Gilloise, Benfica, Athletic Club and now PSV.

“Great performance from the lads, I thought,” Howe said after the 3-0 win at St James’ Park. “Really good energy today from not just the players but the supporters as well.

“I thought there was a really good feeling in the ground as the teams came out. A different atmosphere for these nights and can't thank the crowd enough for the support, the love they gave the players, I think that really, really helped us.

“I thought our energy was good because of it. Our pressing was excellent. Our athleticism was really good and played a big part in our performance, I thought.”

When asked about Newcaslte’s position in the Champions League standings, Howe added: “I haven't seen the table or sort of reflected on that too much. I think just focusing on this game really and how we played and the win and the importance of that, whatever it does to us in the table, we would be in a better position than we were before the game.

“Of course, I think we had one of the most, if not the most, difficult last game and we were well aware of that and that put even more importance on this one, so I'm delighted with the result.”

Before Newcastle travel to Paris, they host high-flying Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon (2pm kick-off).
