Newcastle United star will be hit with Premier League ban if this happens v Burnley

Newcastle United latest news: Bruno Guimaraes is facing the prospect of a Premier League suspension.

Newcastle United head to Turf Moor tonight in search of just their second away Premier League win of the season.

The Magpies were beaten by Manchester United on Friday night to extend their unwanted record on the road in the league this season. Eddie Howe’s side face another trip to the north west tonight with Scott Parker’s Burnley their opponents.

2025 has been a memorable year for the club, with a Carabao Cup win and Champions League qualification secured and they will be desperate to end that year on a high with a victory against the Clarets. However, to do that, they will have to do something that they have managed to do just once since April 7 - win a Premier League match away from St James’ Park.

To do that, Howe will need his biggest players to stand up and be counted tonight and then again when 2026 gets underway with games against Crystal Palace and Leeds United at St James’ Park during the first week of January. There is, though, a risk that one of their biggest players may not be available for selection at the weekend.

Bruno Guimaraes at risk of Premier League ban

Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes will be handed a one-match ban by the Premier League if he is booked during tonight’s clash with Burnley at Turf Moor.

The Brazilian has been shown four yellow cards in the Premier League so far this season, picking up the latest of those during their defeat against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light earlier this month. Guimaraes was one of four Magpies players to be shown a yellow card during that defeat at the Stadium of Light, alongside Sandro Tonali, Malick Thiaw and Joe Willock.

Unlike his teammates, that booking puts Guimaraes at immediate risk of a suspension as it was his fourth of the campaign. Premier League rules on yellow card suspensions read: ‘According to The FA's disciplinary rules, any player who earns five bookings from their side's first 19 Premier League matches of a season will have to serve a one-match ban in the same competition. Premier League yellow cards are not carried over to the EFL Cup or FA Cup.

‘Players who accumulate 10 yellow cards in Premier League matches up to and including their side's 32nd fixture will serve a two-match suspension in the competition.’

Guimaraes, therefore, would miss Newcastle United’s match against Crystal Palace on Sunday if he is shown a yellow card by Robert Jones. If he avoids being booked tonight, then he will pass the threshold and not be at an immediate risk of suspension during their upcoming matches.

There are no other immediate suspension risks in the first-team. Joelinton and Dan Burn have both been shown three yellow cards each this season, but with just one match to play before the threshold, neither will exceed that tonight.

The only suspension worry they have in the coming weeks is that Fabian Schar will miss the first-leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final clash against Manchester City at St James’ Park next month.
