Keys, in his regular online blog, claims the ‘frontrunners’ to arrest control of United from Sports Direct tycoon Mike Ashley are in fact NOT from Saudi at all.

He said: “Newcastle fans should hope that the group wanting to buy their club can pull things together by mid-February. They’re still at the table. And it’s not the Saudi’s. I was pleased when Steve Bruce cooled that nonsense. Well - it’s not the Saudi’s right now although it is fair to say they they’ve been ‘sniffing’ around.”

Qatar-based BeIN Sports presenter Keys, who used to work for Sky Sports, added to his blog claims with the following tweet: “No takeover could ever happen in 48 hours. The frontrunners to buy are still at the table & it’s not the Saudis, as I said last week. It’s the same group who hoped to have a deal done by January. Next time to start getting excited is mid-February.”

Keys is a controversial figure among the United fanbase, having made some remarkable claims regarding former manager Rafa Benitez last season.

Last week, Keys said: “The Saudi bid is not credible. But that doesn’t mean Ashley isn’t going to - or won’t sell.”

On Ashley, he continued: “I don’t know him but I wish he owned my club. You have no debt. You’re the only club in the league that can say that.”
