Steve Bruce has called up Barlaser, Tom Allan Dan Langley, Kelland Watts and Jack Young to his squad ahead of the Premier League restart.
Barlaser – who helped loan club Rotherham United win promotion to the Championship – is ineligible to play in the club’s remaining games, but head coach Bruce wanted to assess the midfielder ahead of next season.
The 23-year-old said: “It’s very good to see familiar faces. It was tough as well. I haven’t trained in four of five weeks, but I’ve been ticking over on my runs. The gaffer says he’s going to give us a chance. He wants to have a look, which is good for me.”
Newcastle restart their campaign with against Sheffield United on Sunday, and first-team coach Steve Harper told NUFC TV: “Dan’s come in on a high after his promotion. He was one of the key players.”
