A clutch of Championship clubs are tracking the Newcastle United striker, who has found his opportunities limited in the first half of the season.

Gayle – who scored 24 goals for loan club West Bromwich Albion last season – is interesting Leeds, according to The Athletic, though it’s claimed that Financial Fair Play regulations are an issue for the club.

Gayle – who has made three substitutes appearances this season – is reportedly instead “likely” to join Nottingham Forest.

However, Steve Bruce could yet give Gayle a chance at United. Speaking in August, United's head coach said: “I see a role for him. There’ll always be interest from the Championship. I think I’ve tried to sign him three times. But, since I came in, I’ve told him ‘Dwight, get yourself fit, and you can be part of this going forward’.”
