Dwight Gayle of Newcastle United looks on prior to the Premier League match between Newcastle United and Wolverhampton Wanderers at St. James Park on February 27, 2021 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England.

And while this change is being seen as a positive move by the Newcastle United fanbase, many don’t think Bruce has gone far enough.

NUFC starting XI: Martin Dubravka; Emil Krafth, Jamaal Lascelles, Ciaran Clark, Paul Dummett; Isaac Hayden, Jonjo Shelvey, Joe Willock; Ryan Fraser, Joelinton, Dwight Gayle.

There is no place on the United bench for either of Matty Longstaff or Elliot Anderson.

Here’s how #NUFC Twitter reacted to the news...

@dpgcrimethink – “And here the Toon stumble into yet another "must win" fixture with little confidence. Some of these lot are due a performance, right? Right? Anyway, here's hoping. Howay the lads! Let’s put some bloody graft in and bring home an important 3 points!”

@gerfagantoon1 – “Here we go again, another 2 hours of pain, at least Jeff got benched on the plus side.”

@chris_armin – “I don’t care how or why or who or when. Just please win tonight lads!”

@Beech15C – “I don’t care how we get the 3 points but just win.”

@KMEasy83 – “Good to see Gayle back in the squad but I thoroughly expect him to no doubt be played out of position and given no service whatsoever.”

@Joeeeeeee_96 – “Can't complain too much about that team selection bar Krafth and Shelvey. Whether we have enough to pull something off is another thing altogether. HWTL!!”
